In the Darkness of Winter

In the darkness of winter,

Two months travel round the sun before daylight,

The birds sing.

In the darkness of winter,

With hours of night left to give way to light,

The birds sing.

In the darkness of winter,

Long before golden beams break my slumber,

The birds sing.

They know

For certain

The spring

Is coming.

Since Christmas and whenever I have been out walking, I have noticed bird song. Perhaps at the back end of last year, I was distracted by the festive season, but I do not recall hearing the birds sing. Now it the very middle of winter, a change seems to have happened No longer is the air silent and empty. Even in the darkness –  the long, endless, cold darkness – there is song, there is life. There is hope that the days will soon lengthen. It will be warm and there will be light. I know because the birds sang it to me!
